There are a wide variety of freshwater fish that may be stocked in aquaponics holding tanks or ponds. In selecting these aquatic live stock, there several important aspects that require consideration:

Are these fish being raised for eating or are they ornamental fish intended as pets?Which fish are best suited to the weather at your location? Tilapia need relatively warm weather, while trout are do better in cold weather locations. White BassWhite bass are a small species of the bass family, usually not weighing more than three to four pounds at largest. Also known as sandies, these fish grow rapidly to adult size during their short lifespan of only three to four years. The white bass is also an excellent tasting fish species that can thrive in aquaponics systems. Unlike the tilapia, the white bass is carnivorous and it feeds on small crabs and smaller fish in a tank. White bass are temperature tolerant and can be raised in tanks with other larger or similarly sized fish

CrappiesCrappie have delicious, flaky, white flesh which has earned a reputation among the finest tasting freshwater fish. Crappie are prolific breeders and adapt well to closed systems. On the downside, crappies need two years minimum before they are able reproduce. The average size of the adult crappie is between one half and one pound, though they are known to grow much larger. Carnivorous, crappies can be fed insects and small fish if they are kept in a closed water fish tank or pond. Like the white bass, crappie can be kept in a tank with other species of fish as long as relative size is taken into consideration.

KoiKoi are a colorful, ornamental fish that are a domesticated version of the common wild carp, Cyprinus Carpio. They grow to over 3 feet in length and have life spans of over 30 years. It is the national fish of Japan, where koi are kept as family pets and are often given as gifts. Koi are omnivores that eat both animal and vegetable food. Koi recognize their owners as they approach the pond at feeding time and swim to the normal feeding are. As large fish that love eating, koi can also be trained to take food from their owner’s hand. Koi have very distinctive colors and physical characteristics that enable individual fish to be easily recognized and they are often given names by their owners. Koi will reproduce in a fish tank or pond with the proper water conditions.

Goldfish Goldfish are a very common , much smaller member of the carp family. They are often confused with koi but can be easily distinguished by size and lack of the koi’s signature facial “barbells.” Goldfish breeds vary greatly in size, body shape, fin configuration and coloration. Goldfish will reproduce in a fish tank or pond and can survive across a wide range of temperatures. Goldfish are a good choice for very small aquaponic systems since they are hardy and can live in relatively restricted spaces.
